I really wanted a Mad Katz FightPad for my 2D gaming needs, but the $60 USD cost was iNSanE! As luck would have it, I found a much more affordable alternative on eBay. Some Hong Kong- and China-based merchants are selling a bunch of supposed Sega Saturn USB controllers. I bought one a month or two ago.
The Saturn controller has two rows of three buttons, plus a pair of shoulder buttons and a start button. There is no select button. It's a standard USB device, so it'll work out of the box with all modern computer operating systems. It even works on a PS3! (Regrettably, it won't work on the Xbox 360.) And of course, for Street Fighting, the three-by-two button layout is perfect!
Now, I have no idea whether these Saturn controllers are authentic. The box that came with it was real enough, though. It was nice and shiny, and the print and graphics were professional. The controller itself feels pretty good. My only complaint is the shoulder buttons. They make a harsh snapping sound when I press them, as if the plastic were about to break. They haven't broken yet, but it's not very encouraging.
Thankfully, the rest of the controller is fine. The circular directional pad feels kinda float-y, as if it were sitting on an air cushion. I don't think it's a bad thing. It's more sensitive this way, requiring less force to operate. The buttons are nice to press. I don't know why, but the tactile feedback is smooth and oh so gratifying.
The Saturn controllers usually go for between $20 and $25 USD on eBay. I think one of the merchants is having a sale right now. Check it out; search "Saturn" and "USB" on eBay. It's a pretty good buy, if I may say so.
